We're screwed. Unfortunately, I can reproduce the display problems of the event markers with OpenGL 2.1 under OS X (see screenshot - the event markers appear as very thin horizontal line segments). If you see the 1281 error logged using the code above, you can determine that the error is actually originating from an OpenGL call made before the glUseProgram call.
